Leather
- Number one cowhide producer in Japan: Himeji City and Tatsuno City
- The leather industry in Hyogo Prefecture was founded in the late Yayoi period when those who travelled from mainland Asia and settled in Japan brought tanning techniques with them. In the mid-Edo period, it flourished with the development of a nationwide commodity economy and the merchandise policy of the Himeji Domain. The industry rapidly became commercialized with the adoption of modern tanning methods in the Meiji period and the specialization in military demand in the Taisho period. It has long developed as a production base for tanned leather, a primary leather product, and many factories have executed their own unique techniques, growing into one of the leading high-quality leather production areas in the country.
