Kobe Furniture
- The birthplace of Western furniture in Japan: Kobe
- Kobe Western furniture was born in and around the settlement when the port opened in 1868. It is said that the first furniture was made by Tokusuke Maki, a shipwright who came to work from the Shiwaku Islands in Shikoku, who set up a workshop in what is now Kobe's Chuo Ward and began making furniture by imitating the foreign furniture and ship equipment that was brought to Kobe. Since then, Kobe's Western furniture has been highly praised for its unique designs in the high-end Japanese-Western furniture field.
