In 1850, during the Edo period, Tanaka Tatsuzo from Ei, Awaji Island, brought back skilled craftsmen and techniques from Sakai, in Senshu, Osaka to Awaji and began producing incense sticks. The area flourished thanks to its favourable climate and convenient port for bringing in raw materials and transporting products. Currently, incense sticks are also being sold to international luxury brands and is highly regarded in the industry by high-end clients worldwide.
