Clay Roof Tiles (Awaji Roof Tiles)
- One of Japan's three major roof tile producing areas: Awaji Island
- Awaji is the largest producer of black smoked roofing tiles (ibushi tiles) in Japan, with a 400-year history of tile making. Awaji Island clay is smoked during firing to create a carbon film on the surface of the tile, giving it an unparalleled strength and a beautiful silver-like shine. Not only are they used in traditional Japanese architecture, but also in Western-style homes, museums, and public facilities. In recent years, they have also been used as landscaping materials for interiors, exteriors, and gardening.
